BBJs vs. Gulfstreams: Choosing the Right Large Aircraft for Your Needs

Learn the key differences between BBJs and Gulfstream G650s to determine which large aircraft suits your needs best.

When it comes to large aircraft, the Gulfstream G650 is a familiar favorite, but the Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) offers its own advantages. In this episode of the Iron Bird podcast, Charlie Foulkrod, Sales Director at Avjet Global Sales, breaks down the differences between these two giants of the skies and offers insights into why each could be the perfect fit, depending on your needs.

The Appeal of the Gulfstream G650

The G650 is a common aircraft in the private jet market, renowned for its speed, flexibility, and ability to land in smaller airports. Charlie notes, "A lot of people have them, and they've come down a lot in price, making them an attractive buy for those who want a reliable, high-performing aircraft." Current pricing on pre-owned models can be as low as $32 million, offering incredible value for a large, long-range jet.

The Case for the BBJ

While less common than the G650, with only about 160 in operation, the BBJ offers unrivaled space and customization. "The BBJ is essentially two G650 cabins smashed together," Foulkrod explains. Although they burn more fuel, BBJs have much lower parts costs due to the widespread use of 737 parts. This makes maintenance significantly cheaper in the long run, while offering unmatched cabin space and luggage capacity, making it an ideal choice for clients who prioritize luxury and space.

Choosing between a BBJ and a G650 ultimately comes down to your specific needs. If you're looking for speed and access to smaller airports, the G650 is hard to beat. However, if space and customization are your priorities, the BBJ may be worth the investment.
