Understanding the BBJ Market: Price Ranges, Opportunities, and Considerations

Learn about BBJ pricing trends, inventory levels, and key considerations for buyers interested in the Boeing Business Jet market.

With only about 160 Boeing Business Jets (BBJs) in operation globally, the BBJ market is niche but full of opportunities. Charlie Fulcrod, Sales Director at Avjet Global Sales, offers an insider’s view of the current BBJ market, discussing pricing, inventory levels, and key considerations for potential buyers.

Pricing Trends

The BBJ market ranges widely in price, depending on factors such as the age of the aircraft, hours flown, and interior specifications. "You can find older BBJs from the late '90s for around $20 million," says Fulcrod. On the other end of the spectrum, brand-new models like the Max 8, with minimal flight hours, are listed at around $90 million, down from the $140 million it cost to build.

Considerations for Buyers

When purchasing a BBJ, it’s essential to consider the total cost of ownership, including fuel burn, maintenance, and potential interior upgrades. Fulcrod advises buyers to budget for additional expenses, such as hangar space (which can be costly due to the aircraft's size) and crew training. Additionally, while parts are generally cheaper for BBJs due to the widespread availability of 737 components, buyers should be prepared for higher operating costs compared to smaller jets like the G650.

The BBJ market offers a wide range of opportunities for buyers looking for spacious, customizable aircraft. However, potential buyers should be aware of the higher costs associated with operating these larger jets and plan accordingly.
